Baptism

"Through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ's holy church, are incorporated into God's mighty acts of salvation, and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God's gift, offered to us without price." (The United Methodist Hymnal, 1989)

In the United Methodist Church, the baptism of infants includes the reaffirmation of the vows of the baptismal covenant by parents, sponsors, and the congregation; but chiefly it celebrates what God is doing and will do in the life of the infant. Through baptism, God claims those being baptized, whatever their age or ability to profess their faith, with divine grace. We acknowledge baptisms from all other faith traditions and believe that while infants are welcome to be baptized, we respect a parent's right to determine the age at which their child will be baptized.
